Corten and Bitumen.
A Sculpture of Digital chaos across the landscape.
Continuing on from the theme of ‘Digital Litter’ 2008, Tatton is presenting a tangible form to our world of digital messaging using symbolic zeros and ones.
The zeros measure 120cm in diameter and all sections are 22cm square hollow box sections. Several of the zero and one units are welded together and orient with each other to provide a visual precariousness, yet they are fabricated from 3mm corten steel and welded to withstand heavy measures of human interaction – for display in any Australian public place. They are welded with 12mm steel rod on all corners of the zeros and ones, so there are soft 6mm curved edges on all sections of the sculpture.
All surfaces of the welded steel are coated with a layer of bitumen with fine gravel dust embedded within, creating a surface resembling a highway road surface. The steel rust is allowed to bleed through the bitumen in places which creates a form of rust patination of black and red/ browns, an industrial aesthetic that distinguishes the sculpture within the context of several millennia…
The overall footprint of the sculpture is to be finessed on site to consider the spacial weights and volumes of the selected environment. As an approximate footprint area the sculpture will occupy 12meters x 10meters.
The sculpture is suitable for installation on grassed, paved and concreted surfaces.
Our messages are sent outward into the ether. Digitally, verbally, physically; on a multitude of levels we extend our intentions out to our environs… Receptors process our messages. They have travelled via code, to be deciphered into a corresponding language at the receiving end….
Where these messages transport, where they are suspended, this arena is ungoverned. Laid bare to mutation, to experimentation or to manipulation by our human minds, our messages arrive after the fact. The transmission of intentions, on so many levels, through so many millennia, must always remain ripe for Corruption.
